The Globe’s L6P investigation explores the COVID-19 story for racialized communities
The L6P neighbourhood in Brampton, Ontario has consistently seen one of the country’s highest testing positivity rates, often more than 20 per cent this spring. It’s a microcosm of the COVID-19 story in Canada, where racialized populations have been the hardest hit.
Led by The Globe’s race reporter, Dakshana Bascaramurty, L6P is a new Globe investigation that looks deeper into the story through a large-scale community examination. Working with community journalists who live in Brampton or are connected to its predominately South Asian population: Raji Aujla, Vrunda Bhatt, Ahmar Khan, Gundeep Singh, Mariam Nouser, Camilla Bains, Mariyah Salhia, Simran Singh, and Preet Brar, their work will appear in The Globe.
Stories are being translated into Gujarati, Punjabi, and Urdu, and Hindi and The Globe will be using platforms such as WhatsApp to connect with residents over the several months the investigation will run. In addition, a survey delivered to every address in L6P will allow residents to convey how their lives have been impacted by COVID.
